The contributions range across a wide number of topics such as the writer's depiction of the GAA, his father Francis' period as a volunteer in the IRA, and his interaction with the Catholic Church. In addition, there are a couple of perceptive readings of The Dark four and a half decades after it was first published. The pages are adorned by some stunning pictures supplied courtesy of Madeline McGahern, the writer's widow, and various photocopies of drafts of work taken from the Archive in NUI Galway. The overall impact is thus pleasing from both an academic and an aesthetic point of view.
